The 2023 Census Will Include Questions about the Rainbow Communities for the First Time

Tuesday 7 March 2023 will be Census Day in Aotearoa. This will be the first time “the census will ask questions about gender, sexual identity, and variation of sex characteristics (generally known as intersex).”

If you are part of our Rainbow communities, it’s important that you take part. By taking part in the census, you can help create a better understanding of social outcomes and inequities facing our communities.

The data could also be useful for community’s organisations, advocates, or any groups or individuals to advocate for changes and the needs of our Rainbow communities.

The updated questions on the 2023 census will look like below.

Who can take part in the survey?

According to Stats NZ, “if you will be in Aotearoa New Zealand on Tuesday 7 March 2023, you must take part in the 2023 Census. This means you will need to complete census forms or have someone help complete them for you.”
